Ruin the Freeway

Near my house, about two minutes of driving away, there is a great freeway. It's not really wide, but it has a very high speed limit (110 km/h - over 65 mph) which is unusual in the area. There is one more thing to it: it's a toll road.

Since it's a toll road, I want to use it as well as I can, which means drive at the speed limit. However, I am usually unable to do so. Why? Trucks.

Those trucks pass each other, and since each of them drives at 80 km/h, we get a road with a speed limit of 80 km/h. In some places this passing is illegal, but the trucks still keep going.

Something needs to be done about those trucks. Hopefully with more enforcement this annoying habit will disappear.

Taking a driver's road test can be a pretty horrid experience, especially if you make a lot of mistakes. The fact that you'll have a test examiner sitting right next to you studying all of your moves will make you very nervous, no matter how much you prepare beforehand. It is possible, however, to lessen the nervousness somewhat, and that's by getting all the right knowledge. Preparation is extremely important, as it will build up your confidence and decrease your anxiety somewhat.

Some drivers need to prepare and practice more than others, so if you think you're in the category of somebody needing to prepare more, you need to get some good study material. The guidebook you get from the DMV isn't enough. There are some great online programs you can learn from, including some inside secrets that can be wonderful assets.

A good driving test studying program will take you through every single step of a road test. Some of these online study guides also include videos that you can watch so that you'll know exactly what will be expected of you during your test. You'll learn every single last thing that your examiner will be watching you for. The more secrets and knowledge you'll have, the less intimidating your examiner will be to you.

There are also practice tests you can take online. While these are mainly helpful for the driver's written test, you can still apply what you read during your road test. A good learning program will be comprehensive, complete with videos, secrets, tips, practice tests, and more. All of these will help you become a better driver, and you will more than likely pass your driver's road test!

Don't let yourself become too nervous when taking your driving test. By studying online with a good program, you'll learn all that you'll need for feeling confident on the day of your testing! The more confident you are, the better you'll do.

Pass the Driving Test on the First Attempt

All learner drivers want to pass their driving test the first time, and for that many people have set up driving schools. Todd Bertshinger wrote an article for one of them about passing at the first attempt.

First of all, it matters who you have along for the ride. If you don't have your full driver's license yet, you'll be forced to drive with a licensed driver accompanying you. While it may be tempting to drive around with your friends, it's far better to enlist the help of someone you know to be an excellent driver, or even a professional who can critique your techniques and show you more efficient and effective ways to drive.

Secondly, it matters where you practice. What good would it do if you spent all your time practicing in empty areas and deserted roads, only to have to pull onto a crowded highway during the exam? The best thing one can do in this regard is to find out where the tests will be conducted. Tests are often conducted either on closed courses, or on the city streets themselves near the testing center. Whatever the case, you can likely inquire about access to these areas, and then practice driving on them. Failing that, many driving schools often have courses that simulate actual driving test conditions. That way, you'll be thoroughly prepared to do exactly what you need to do on the day of the test.

One other thing you should keep in mind is the critical need to remember all of your basics. Driving test administrators will be looking for all the little details that you're like to miss if you become nervous, such as adjusting your seat to the appropriate height, fastening your seat belt, and checking your mirrors. Even if you drive perfectly, you can still fail the test if you overlook these common steps. This is another area where a driving instructor can be a tremendous boon, as they'll drill these steps into you during practice, to the point where they become nearly automatic.

As with any test, the key to passing a driving exam is to know what's going to be expected of you, and then to study and practice those very things. As mentioned above, you're going to be expected to know the basics of driving in various conditions, and to have mastered all the fundamental elements of driving safety as well. As such, these are the things to practice, and if you master them, you should have no trouble at all during the exam itself. Good luck!

The Scariest of All

I did it. The thing that should not be done. What no sane driver should do, unless its his profession. I took a ride with a learner driver during a driving lesson with a professional instructor.

The problem with taking such rides is not the not-so-good ability of the driver and the risk of accident. The risk is much lower, because the instructor can control the car from his side (dual brakes). The problem is that it's scary. Learners drive slowly and they don't control the car well. And above it all, it was a manual transmission.

I must say, the learner I rode with was quite good for the number of lessons. However, it's still not such a great experience.

Driving students are weird. Instead of getting themselves a good driving test guide, they go online hunting for free tips. Well, if they don't want to pay, no one will force them, but sometimes a good guide can save much more than it costs. Anyway, here are some tips for the test in an article I wrote.

Follow These Tips If You Want to Pass Your Driver's License Test!

If you plan to take your driver's test soon, then you're probably feeling really nervous. If you feel dread or anxiety whenever you think of your upcoming exam, then you can take the following steps to ensure that you're well prepared.

• Make sure you practice as much as you can. The driver you practice with should be somebody who is very responsible and good.

• Practice driving on the same route that your test will take place on. If you're unsure, ask friends or look online for maps. Usually, lists can be found online of exact routes.

• Make sure your seat is well adjusted and that you fit in comfortably. While you're at it, adjust your mirrors as well. Routinely check them.

• Familiarize yourself with all the street signs, speed limits, hand gestures, and so forth. Make sure you know the speed limit at the testing area.

• Try to get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Wake up in time to practice one last time before taking the driver's test. Refresh yourself on anything you might be having problems with, such as parallel parking.

It's also in your best interest to look over driving test study guides on the internet. There are also practice tests you can take. Watch an instruction video online so that you can preview what your test is going to be like. Learn, step by step, everything you'll have to do in order to pass. You may still find yourself nervous on the day of your test, but if you prepare yourself and practice enough beforehand, you'll be feeling pretty confident!

Just follow these tips and look over an online study guide. You can pass your road test and get your driver's license if you know what you're doing, and an online course can give you all the knowledge you need!

South Korean Determination

The Telegraph reports about a very strange yet determined woman. All she wanted to do is pass her driving test and get her driver's license. However, something went wrong. Very wrong.

This woman has taken, watch this, 771 tests. All these times she couldn't pass the written part of the test, so she never even got to the practical test. She has taken this test every working day since 2005.

This article is from February, so this poor woman may have already passed. If not, she is approaching her 900th test. Well, good luck!

Preparing for a Driving Test should only commence when you have reached a certain level of Driving Skill and will be so much easier than doing it the other way round. A Driving Test Pass is only the beginning of your Driving career not the end!

There are several every day driving skills that are essential for safe motoring but which are not tested on a Driving Test. Would you ignore these because they will not be encountered on your Test? I hope not.

What are they?

Attitude to the Driving Test.

There are many myths and legends surrounding the Driving Test; lets examine some of them The right attitude for a new beginner Driver should be a non confrontational one and a realisation that you the Driver are responsible for the result, be it positive or negative.

Examiners do not have a quota of passes or fails to be achieved. Yes they are human and subject to outside influences such as first impressions, as we all are. It is just as easy for a candidate to create a poor first impression as it is to achieve a good one so why not do your homework and give yourself a head start over those candidates who don't take the Test seriously enough.

An Examiner is not looking for perfection but a reasonably high degree of competence allied to good action and reaction times in all situations. If you have not taken the trouble to familiarise yourself with all the various hotspots which may be temporary or permanent, scattered throughout the general Test Route area then it is very likely that here is where you will come a cropper. "Oh but I only made that one error because I didn't know the new road layout was about to be implemented, and it wasn't there yesterday ".This type of mistake in an unusual situation leads to numerous grade three faults on Driving Tests and as we know one grade three is a disqualification. Grade three type difficult situations are commonplace in every day driving and if strict marking was not in force then there would be many more first time Test Passes but many more Write-Offs with the attendant misery.

Obviously nerves can play a big part on the day and some candidates are better at controlling these emotions than others. If you can reduce this stress by telling yourself that it will not be the end of the World if you don't pass this time then you will probably be more relaxed and will drive much better. Remember it is you who has to do your homework and be confident that you can do all manoeuvres, not the Examiner. With this confidence will come competence and you will do a much better job on the day.

Not enough homework, not enough practise and not enough lessons all conspire to produce an unsatisfactory result. Taking lessons two weeks before your Test just won't prepare you sufficiently to be successful and to build up that level of confidence that is needed.

Take care and Take lessons. Driving Schools are not there to fleece; you they are there to help you achieve a satisfactory level of Driving Skill and to enable you to arrive alive!

The Most Important Lane Change Tip of All Time

Some drivers have no sense of the road. They don't know how to handle traffic, handle a good speed, and generally drive well. But one of the most annoying kinds is the kind that doesn't know how to change lanes well.

Today I was taking my usual Saturday drive. I was on the right lane, and someone was on the left. The one on the left wanted to change lanes to the right. He signaled and slowed down from an already slow speed. Even when there was enough distance to change, he didn't change. He slowed down.

This weird situation continued for half a minute until I decided that it's annoying and passed him. However, we can all learn the most important lane change tip of all time:

When you change lanes, ACCELERATE!

You must fit in with other traffic, and if you brake, you will NOT fit in (unless you are driving faster than the other lane, which is unlikely, and then you brake). So easy, so simple, so many people don't do this well.

Five Mistakes to Avoid When Taking Your Driving Test

If you're prepping for your driver's license test, then you're probably studying and practicing as often as you can. The internet is filled with many resources and information that will help you. In addition to tips, you can also read study guides and take interactive practice tests. Here you find a list of common mistakes that some student driver's make during their examination. Make sure you remember the following tips if you want to pass your road test:

• Never brake too hard. You need to remove your foot from the accelerator slowly and early. Coast lightly, and don't move straight from the accelerator to the brake too quickly. You will lose points if you do.

• Don't just automatically go at a green light; make sure that no other car is passing by, and that the cars in the other lane really do have a red light. Also, never forget to look both ways.

• Don't even try to take the test until you know 100% where all the controls in the vehicle are and what they can be used for. Even switches that may seem unimportant to you may be brought up by your examiner. Sometimes they may question you on some randomly.

• If you need to change lanes, don't slow down your vehicle. Try to go at the same speed as the other cars in order to keep the flow of traffic going smoothly.

• Don't look at the wheel. Look at the road ahead, in your mirrors and to the other lane(s). Don't worry about your examiner, either. Concentrate on the road and cars surrounding you at all times.

Follow these tips, read study guides online and practice all you can. If nothing else, you'll feel more confident, and the more confident and responsible you are, the better your chances of passing!

Blind Drivers Ahead!

The Wenatchee World reports about an amazing thing: blind people driving. Blind! This new and amazing technology was tested at the University of Maryland by 20 blind people.

This amazing vehicle is a result of a challenge posted by the blindness advocacy group which asked which American university could build a car that can be driven by blind people like normal car are driven by sighted people. Well, aparently, they made some progress.

So how does it work? A laser sensor at the front of the vehicle shoots a beam which then returns to the sensor, and from there the data is analyzed by a powerful computer at the back of the vehicle. The computer generates a map of the area, and that way helps the driver by giving him instructions through headphones about steering.

This is a truly amazing discovery. Hopefully this invention will enable blind people to have the freedom we, sighted people, have with cars. Let's also hope they'll drive better than some of the sighted people...

Pass the Test With Ease

The first and final thing all new drivers want is to pass the driving test. If it's done easily, it's even better. Here is an article by Lucy Penn that explains how to do it pretty well.

How to Pass Your Driving Test With Ease

The majority of people fail their driving test on the first time taking it. A lot of the time it's down to your nerves as driving tests can be very daunting. Below is a list of ten top tips on passing your driving test:

1) Obviously you need to stay calm. This may be easier said than done though - nerves are sometimes uncontrollable. If you show your nerves too badly and it affects your driving you will make the test instructor feel unsafe - this won't bode well for your chances of passing!
2) Needless to say, checking your mirrors is vital during your test. You need to clearly show your instructor that you are checking your blind spot and keeping an eye on what is going on around you during your test. Whatever you do...DON'T pull out without checking your mirrors - you will fail immediately.
3) Check you mirrors some more...seriously you need to exaggerate this. Turn your neck so your instructor can clearly see you checking your blind spot. But, obviously do spend too long looking - you need to concentrate on the road as well. You should also glance in your rear-view mirror every time you break - the test instructor needs to see that you're aware of the traffic behind you. Someone may be really close behind you - if you suddenly break they will go straight into the back of you.
4) Make the instructor feels at ease - again, this point really relates back to not showing your nerves. If the test instructor feels unsafe they won't pass you.
5) Always check your blind spot when pulling out.
6) If you make a mistake when reverse parking remember, you have a chance to correct it. If you reverse back and realise that you are at a slight angle then you will have one chance to correct it. Simply put your handbrake on, pull back out - straighten up and carefully reverse back in.
7) Speed - obviously you need to adhere to the speed limit by not going too fast, but driving too slowly can be just as dangerous. Keep to the speed limit.
8) Always get in the right lane at roundabouts. If however you do get in the wrong lane, don't panic - and don't cut anyone up. So, if you have been told to take the first exit and you accidentally go in the right hand lane - don't cut people up to take that exit, go all the way around and apologise to the instructor - at least you will show that you're following the rules of the road.
9) Make sure you don't roll back on a hill. This is often a place where many learners slip up. Rolling backwards on a hill can be dangerous for many reasons. So, always ensure that you have the biting point before you drive away.
10) Learn the road signs! Obviously the last thing you want to do on your test is drive down a one-way street because you don't know what the sign means.

Follow these simple tips and you will soon have to think about finding a car for a new driver.

Two Lanes, Too Slow

Once again, people try to annoy me with annoying driving maneuvers, and they succeed. This time is once again slow drivers driving by each other.

This annoying thing causes a 90 km/h two-lane road become a 60-70 km/h road, and passing is impossible (they block both lanes). There is nothing that can be done about it. Honking won't help, flashing the headlights won't help (and it's illegal), and becoming generally annoyed won't help.

What will help? Being patient. Eventually they'll figure out that they're blocking the road and delaying traffic. Well, hopefully they'll figure this out.

Drunk Driver Jailed

The Sentinel reports about Martin Cartlidge, a 19 year old teenager who killed a 61 old man. How? Simple. He was driving drunk.

Some people just refuse to learn. Martin was drinking at a pub, and then he entered his car to go back home. He then lost control, hit the man's car, and killed him. For that, he received 2.5 years in jail.

I'll say it one more time: DON'T drink and drive!

Preparing for the Driving Test

The most important thing about the driving test is coming prepared. If you are not ready, you will never pass unless you are extremely lucky. Here is an article by Julia Cleanthous about preparing yourself for the test.

Preparing For the Driving Test

The driving test is an important one as it determines your capability to hit the road. While the government would like to give you your licenses they can only do so if you prove to be a competent driver. This is why the driving test both the written exam and the actual test are designed to be challenging. This really pays off in the long run as it reduces accidents on the road. Even though the driving test is challenging, if you are prepared and know how to handle yourself and the car, there is really little chance of failing.

Every area has different standards and requirements for getting your driver license. Generally, a learner's permit will only require a computerised knowledge test and the completion of a set amount of driving hours as set by the local regulatory agency. Afterwards, the new driver will have to wait up to one year and the complete an on road driving test to qualify for the full driver's license.

Now, in Australia there are different steps that need to be taken before acquiring the full or open license. These steps vary state to state and territory to territory but all include; A learner driver license, A Provisional license, stage 1, and A Provisional license, stage 2.
There are tips that can be used in each individual territory and in fact in many other areas and countries in order to successfully prepare for a driving test.

It all starts with knowledge.

The old axiom, knowledge is power holds true in all facets of life including the driving test. Before you can even reach for that license you need to first study the rules of the road. It does not matter if you are getting ready to take the Road Ready Knowledge Test or the Hazard Perception Test, if you do not know the material you will fail it. Failing these test, or any test that is required by your local government can result in penalties and set backs.

Many agencies, like the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, offer booklets for those seeking to take the driving assessment test. In these booklets will be everything you need to know to pass the knowledge portion of the driving exam.

Information that can be found in such booklets includes:

• Road Rules and Laws
• The meanings of various signs and signals
• Common road etiquette
• Advice for different situations such as driving at night, driving in the elements, and others.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Practice is the keyword here and many of those seeking their driver license will soon understand the importance of it. Now many will seek out the advice of parents or guardians and many more will hire a driving instructor to help them out. While parents can provide invaluable insight a good driving instructor will do this and leave out any "helpful shortcuts" that may be illegal.

By practicing, always make sure you are driving with a legally licensed adult; you will begin to understand why certain laws are in place. Practicing is a way to use what you learned from all those booklets in a real world setting where results can be visible. Trucks and Two Lane Highways

Last week I drove on one of the greatest highways around. It really is great. Two lanes going each way, special asphalt, and overall a very high quality road. However, something there is really annoying: trucks.

When trucks pass each other in this road, the lower the speed from 110 km/h (68 mph) to about 80 km/h (50 mph). This is really annoying and dangerous. But even with all those facts, truck drivers don't really care and continue to do that.

Hopefully the road will be expanded to three lanes, and then we will finally have a great highway to drive on.
