Today is Yom Kippur, a special Jewish day in which people fast in order to ask for forgiveness for last year's sins.
In Israel, this day goes much further: people don't use their cars, all stores are closed, and no one works except emergency workers and non-Jews. Even the airport is closed.
I personally don't fast, but I don't drive either. There's nowhere to go anyway.
