Safety First, Gas Second

When people buy a car, they often look at safety, but these days, mileage matters more, as USA Today wrote. However, even if a car has a high IIHS safety ranking (which is not as good as the European one) and a good gas mileage, you can be better off by changing it with a bigger car, better safety, and a slightly lower mileage.

Why? Once again, safety. When a small car hits a big one, the laws of physics leave the small car no chance. It will be crashed and smashed, and the passengers will be seriously hurt.

Does it cost more to have a less efficient car? Yes, definitely. Is a better mileage worth the safety risk? Well, as much as we know, no. Definitely no.

3. 1 in 8 UK drivers are under 25 years of age but 1 in 4 drivers who are killed in car accidents are in this age group.

4. Young drivers have a higher percentage of accidents at night than older drivers.

However, there are a number of measures a young driver can take to save money on car insurance. The first option could be to continue learning. By completing the Driving Standards Agency's Pass Plus Course you will find insurers who offer substantial discounts. The course is designed to improve a newly qualified driver's experience and consists of six practical modules covering driving on a motorway, driving at night, driving in towns, driving out of town, dual carriageways and driving in all weather conditions. There is no test with the course.

Another point worth considering is choosing a car in a low insurance group. Every new car in the UK is assigned to a car insurance group from 1 to 20. A car's insurance group reflects how much the car is going to cost insurers per claim. Cars in group 1 are going to mean a lower insurance premium as they represent the lowest cost for insurers. So ideally, you should be looking for a car that is in a low a group as possible.

Also avoid the temptation to modify your car. Fins, spoilers and other add-ons may look cool but will almost certainly result in a bigger car insurance bill.

Improving your car's security can also help reduce your insurance premium. Best of all, would be to lock your car in a garage overnight but if this is not possible at least keep it on a driveway and not in the street. You could also consider fitting a security device such as an alarm or an immobiliser.

Finally, if you drive safely, within the speed limit, and adhere to the rules of the Highway Code you will undoubtedly reduce the risk of being involved in an accident. And by avoiding accidents you will be able to earn a no-claims discount when you come to renew your car insurance.

Slowers, Again

Today I took another one of my regular Saturday drives, and this one happened to be on a two-way road with one lane going in each direction. I thought I am going for another fun drive (I like this road), but instead I found the worst: slowers.

What are slowers? Those are people who drive slowly enough to make every driver mad. And they cannot be passed. There is either a solid line or oncoming cars, and I had to drive for some time after them in speeds below the speed limit. Yes, that's how annoying they are.

Why aren't the police doing anything? All they do is chasing people who go 10km/h above the speed limit.

First Time Driving: Morgan

Maryland is Going On-Road

For many people, driving on the road is an essential part of the driving test. Not for Maryland drivers. They, like residents of other states, only take a short off-road test, which can be almost passed with blindfolds.

All of this is about to end. Maryland drivers are soon going on-road. Their test will include an off-road part and an on-road part. The test will be harder, but it will determine better whether someone can drive or not.

Getting your First Driver's License

One of the greatest feelings you can have is getting a driver's license for the first time. It's a wonderful feeling of freedom. However, you can't print out your own licenses, and you need to go through a long process in order to be approved for driving. Getting That First Driver's License

Getting that first driver's license is a dream in every young person's life. Being able to have some freedom and going out on their own makes the wait worthwhile. The driver's license permits, by law, a person to operate a motor vehicle. That motor vehicle can be a car, truck, motorcycle or a bus. To acquire a driver's license one must go through a long process in the United States that is pretty much universal from state to state. The only difference from state to state is the age that a person may get their driver's license at.

Not many know this but the very first driver's license, if it can be called that, was issued way back in 1888. It was issued to Karl Benz by the Grand Ducal authorities. Why? Local residents complained about the noise and smell of his vehicle so he received permission to operate it on the public streets; thus receiving the first ever driver's license. In the United States, the first driver's license was issued only to chauffeurs in New York state on August 1, 1910. The first state to require all drivers to have a license after passing a driving test was New Jersey in July of 1913.

To acquire a driver's license one must pass a course known as driver's education. Most public and private high schools offer this course for a semester's length so the students do not have to take it at the DMV. After passing driver's education, the student receives a certificate of excellence and then can sign up for behind the wheel driving lessons. There are high schools that offer behind the wheel course and there are independent companies that offer behind the wheel lessons as well. Each student vying for their permit must complete six hours of behind the wheel with a licensed instructor.

Once the permit is acquired the learning driver is 'permitted' to operate a vehicle with the supervision of a licensed adult. A driver with a learner's permit is allowed to drive at any time of the day and with as many people in the car as long as they are with another licensed adult. If the learner was to break any laws while driving with a permit the same fines that would apply to a licensed driver would apply to them. The learner's permit is enforced for six months whether or not the learner is of legal age to have a license.

Once the time comes for the driving test the learner must be escorted by a parent or guardian to the testing facility with a car that meets the DMV's standards, has insurance and has not failed any recent inspections. It must also have an emergency break in between the driver's seat and the passenger seat. If the learner passes the test they receive their license, which more than likely has restrictions on it for a new driver, and can begin driving on their own.

Driver's licenses are useful not only for driving purposes but also determine whether or not a person is an organ donor and it is the most common form of identification not only across the country but across the globe.

Perfect Parallel Parking

Two weeks ago, on Friday (April 3), I drove to the near city to take my new computer (which I'm using now, it's great!). Driving there on Friday is suicide. It's really congested when you drive, and parking is nearly impossible to find.

As I approached the computer store I didn't see any available parking, so I went ahead and made a U-turn. Then, on the second round, I saw an entrance to a little alley which acts as a parking lot for nearby stores. I parked there and made a super-perfect parallel parking. Usually I don't really make them well, but this one was fantastic.

Then, when I stood at the stairs leading to the store, I saw a perfect parking spot, right in front of the front door.

Luckily, the computer wasn't heavy. And hey, I made a great parking.

First Time Driving: Jamie

When driving for the first time, it's important to have an adult instructor near you to assist you with your driving. Jamie didn't have this. Instead, she had only a friend who recorded the whole event. I'm not sure if that's even legal where she lives, but I am sure that it's highly not recommended.

Slow-Drive Ban

Oh, finally. Traffic cops are finally doing their job and banning slow drivers from the road. Slow driving can be as dangerous as fast driving, and sometimes even more.

However, those facts didn't stop an 83 year old pensioner from driving 10 mph(!) at a 60 mph road(!). Yes, 50 miles per hour (80 km/h!!) under the speed limit. Luckily, police officers caught him and banned him from driving.

The reason for his slow driving was his vision. He can see license plates from only 3 meters, and the law requires 20.5 meters. Due to that limit his license was voided and we all have relatively safer roads now.

There are a bunch of different rules for new drivers and they vary by state. New Jersey has the Cinderella License rule. This states that new drivers must be off of the roads by midnight (hence the title) and they are not allowed to drive with more than one non-relative in the car with them. After one year of having a license the driver graduates to a normal license and can drive at any time of the day with as many passengers in the car as there are seatbelts.

Parents and teens alike need to understand how important safety is when learning how to drive and how quickly it can become treacherous if the right decisions aren't made in a split second. Driving can be fun and enjoyable for teens if they are taught the proper techniques and how to make the correct decisions regarding safety.

The Unpassable

Roads which have two lanes going in each direction are great in theory. You drive most of the time on the right, and when you need to pass you can do so rather safely. However, some drivers make this really difficult.

One of the most annoying habits drivers have is driving slow on the left lane near another slow-moving car. The result is an unpassable block that prevents drivers from passing and driving at a normal speed. I get nearly insane when I see those things happen.

Hopefully something will be done about those drivers.

Waiting Time "Relief"

What happens when you take a greatly needed service and a very small supply? Well, you get a waiting list. A very long one. For example, the waiting time for a driving test in Clare are, unbelievably, 28 weeks.

If you read the article, you see that 28 weeks is an improvement. The situation before that was a waiting time of 61 weeks(!). That's a year and 2 months, and that's an average, meaning there were longer waiting times.

I don't live there, so I don't know why these lines are so long. However, I know one thing: this situation must be changed.

Penalty Points and Your Driving Test

Penalty points are the scariest thing you can say to a new driver. Those license taking points accumulate when you violate traffic laws, and they can eventually cause your license to disappear. Here is a guide to penalty points in the UK by Shola Ogunlokun. Watch out!

If you posses a UK provisional license then you need to beware of the effects of penalty points on your license, and your ability to take the UK driving test.

First of all learner drivers in the UK must be supervised by a full UK license holder who is 21 years or older and has held their license for a minimum of 3 years. Any offence committed by a provisional license holder resulting in penalty points being added to their license could also result in the supervising driver being prosecuted for aiding and abetting.

Here are 6 facts you need to know about penalty points on UK provisional licenses and the driving test.

1. Any points added to your provisional license will stay on for a minimum of 4 years, some penalty points can stay for as long as 10 years!

2. There is no driving course or any other means of getting points off your license, they can only be removed after the statutory time has expired.

3. Points are not automatically removed from licenses, you have to apply to the DVLA and pay a fee for the points to be removed.

4. Points on your provisional license will not stop you from taking the driving test, but if you have more than 6 points on your license, then your license will be revoked under the new driver act! Your pass certificate along with your provisional license will be sent to the DVLA, and you will get a letter back advising that you are once again a learner and need to pass the driving test again.

5. 12 points or more on any UK driving license means a ban.

6. Penalty points on a driving license usually results in higher insurance premiums, so it is in your own interest to abide by the law.

So if you are a holder of a UK provisional driving license, drive carefully, don't break the law otherwise it is going to cost you in time and money to get your full UK driving license.

Getting Lost, Again

Driving is something I really enjoy, but unfortunately this joy doesn't come with a navigation skill. At all. Today, when I tried a different route than usual, I got lost. Again.

I drove today to bring something to a friend, and there are a few ways to get there. After I delivered what I needed, I decided to take a different route than the one I used until now. I thought I knew the way, so instead of turning left at a roundabout I kept going straight.

Well... It took me about ten minutes to fix the mistake I did after that. Ten lost minutes that I could've used for other things, like getting lost in a different place. As I said, my navigation skills are really bad.

I should really improve my navigation skills. Well, maybe some other day.
