Fence Hitter

Last week I was driving around, and suddenly I saw smoke coming from the barrier between the two sides of the road. As I moved ahead I saw a car that smashed into the fence. The driver was OK, and he stepped outside the car. Then I moved along and passed the intersection.

A minute after that I saw the exact same driver with the same car overtaking me at an extremely high speed, and driving in a very confused way.

I guess that's why he found himself in the fence in the first place. Such drivers shouldn't be on the road.

Important Driving Exam Tips - What You Will Be Expected to Do in Order to Prove Your Driving Ability

What, exactly, can you expect to be tested on during your driving exam? What will the examiner be watching for? What must you do in order to demonstrate your good driving abilities?

First of all, if you are feeling nervous - DON'T BE! Take a few deep breaths and try to calm down. As long as you read over your guidebook and online driving course material carefully, you can prepare yourself for your test.

Here are a few tips on what you can do on test day in order to increase your chances of passing.

• Take a few moments to observe the area surrounding the test site before getting into the vehicle. Take note of where all of the parked cars are and how close they are to your test car. It's important to plan ahead of time.
• Remember to do your pre-driving ritual before pulling out of the parking place. Put your seatbelt on securely and adjust the seat and mirrors if you need to. Look over to make sure that the person grading you has their seatbelt on. They might try to trick you.
• The examiner will expect you to know when to yield to other vehicles, which lane to turn into, when to stop for a traffic light, and so forth. If you show any confusion or hesitation, they will notice. You will lose points for it, if not outright fail.
• You're going to have to perform certain maneuvers smoothly and correctly if you want to pass: shifting gears properly at the right times, acceleration at the appropriate times, pulling out of a parking place slowly and carefully, pulling into a parking place slowly and carefully, etc.
• Speaking of parking, this is the one area where many people have trouble. A skilled driver will be expected to ease into any type of parking space without hitting another vehicle or curb. You must also pull out carefully. Before the day of the test, get plenty of parking practice.
• Demonstrate to the examiner that you have good steering and braking capabilities. Always keep your hands on the wheel at the appropriate positions without gripping too tightly. Avoid making jerking movements.
• You may or may not be asked to demonstrate hand signals. Even if your signal lights are in working order, you should still learn hand signals just in case you are asked to use one during the test.

There are many other things you must do, but these will give you some idea of what to expect. Just remember that the examiner is only doing their job and that you shouldn't be intimidated in any way. As long as you study hard and prepare, you should do fine.

Stuck in Snow

Last week local drivers had a great challenge: snow driving. Usually, the worst driving conditions around here happen when it rains. However, last week brought a big snow storm and drivers climbed to the mountains to watch the snow.

However, these genius drivers didn't know that their cars don't do well in the snow, and eventually got stuck. Some spent the night in their car, others were lucky enough to have their cars towed away from danger.

These incidents make me think that physics classes should be mandatory in school. Seriously.

Are you a parent or guardian of a student driver? Teaching your teen to drive can be a bonding experience. You can be the one who teaches them how to drive safely and responsibly. Whether you plan on teaching them alone, or want to work with their driver's education teacher, there are many things you can do to help them learn how to drive.

Here are a few tips and guidelines on what you, as a parent, can do.

• Communication is perhaps the most important thing. You can't simply lecture or yell at your teen if they make a mistake. You must first offer them clear instructions on what to do. Be patient. Encourage them to ask questions. If they mess up, stay calm and explain to them what they did wrong in a positive manner.
• There is a set number of hours that a student driver must practice driving in order to be eligible to take the road test. The number of hours may vary from state to state, so find out what they are in your area. Help them make a log of their practice sessions. List the times and add in details about each practice session, including the roads and weather conditions.
• Find out what the laws are regarding nighttime driving with underage drivers. There is usually a set time each night during which students with learner's permits can practice. Make sure you teach them how to turn the headlights on, and when and where it's appropriate to turn on the bright lights and low beams.
• It's always best (and common sense for that matter) to start out in a vacant parking lot. Take things slowly and easily - there is enough time for them to progress before they take the test. Also, make sure they learn how to pull into a parking place. Use objects such as crates in place of cars in an empty parking lot.
• As your teen becomes more experienced, you can allow them to venture out on more difficult roads. Also, try to arrange a practice session when it's raining. Let them get an idea of what it's like to drive in poor weather conditions.

No matter what happens, don't panic. If you panic, your teen will feel nervous or even scared, and this will only make things worse. Try to stay calm no matter what. As long as you take things slowly and communicate with them effectively, they should do all right. If the student driver is also taking a driver's education class, you should keep in touch with the instructor that everyone is on the same page.

Dispelling Five Falsehoods About Auto Insurance

Driving a vehicle legally in every state requires having at least some level of liability insurance coverage in place. And if that vehicle is financed, an even greater amount of protection is needed so the lender will know the loan can be paid off in case there is an accident, the car is stolen or some other unfortunate event occurs and results in a total loss.

The first falsehood many people associate with auto insurance plans is the notion that any damage to an insured car is covered. In fact, various types of coverage only provide some levels of protection. Liability plans only protect other people and their vehicles and property. Comprehensive policies will pay the costs minus any deductibles for damage to the insured auto from perils caused while it is parked, and a collision plan will pay for damages arising from an accident while driving. For full coverage, both plans must be applied.

Another critical falsehood is the idea that even full coverage plans will protect a vehicle while used for any purpose. In fact, unless a commercial policy is bought, only personal use is covered while driving and not any uses for commercial or business purposes. People who deliver pizzas, newspapers, transport groups of people to church on Sundays and other similar activities are considered to be engaged in a commercial activity while doing them, which requires commercial auto plans. If involved in an accident while on what an insurance company considers to be a business activity, the insurer very well might disapprove any claims arising from damages caused while engaged in a commercial pursuit even if money is not exchanged.

A third falsehood is the thought that older folks must pay more for their policies. But the fact is, older drivers over age 55 who successfully finish a driving course for mature drivers designed to enhance their skills and prevent accidents can get an up to 10 percent discount from many auto insurers. So long as they have good driving records and affirm their abilities to safely operate their cars, elderly people often prove to be good risks for insurers.

Another falsehood regarding costs is the notion that military personnel must pay higher rates to cover their autos. Instead, members of the military typically have lower rates in part due to the fact many do not drive nearly as much as other people to get to work, go to the grocery store and other common activities in which civilians engage. And a military base is one of the most secure areas to park a vehicle, and that makes military personnel very good risks for insurers.

The final falsehood is the idea that red vehicles cost more to insure due to the notion they are involved in more accidents and are ticketed more often. Federal studies show grey vehicles in fact are involved in more accidents, particularly during twilight hours. There is no proof any one color results in more tickets for drivers, and insurers never base rates on the color of any auto.

Do you want to be able to drive a car, and go anywhere in the world? In order to get this type of freedom, you're going to have to go through a driver's test first. For most people, it isn't easy. You don't have to be most people though. You can be one of the 50% or so of examinees who pass on the first try.

Already taken it and failed? Don't worry - you can get a second chance... and third... and fourth... the great thing about the driving exam is that you can keep starting over again until you finally pass. If you are worried about feeling embarrassed in front of your friends and family, just don't tell go around telling them that you plan on taking it. Nobody other than your parents and driving teacher have to know. If you're an adult yourself, nobody other than you and the person who is helping you practice need to know.

As long as you know how to drive safely and avoid making mistakes, you should be able to pass.

Here are some mistakes that you must avoid making if you want to get your license.

• Going well over the speed limit.
• Going too slow even though the road conditions and weather are fine.
• Failing to check your blindspot and mirrors regularly.
• Bumping into something, be it another vehicle, curb, bicycle, etc.
• Not being able to demonstrate good, firm (yet smooth) steering control.
• Not being observant enough while driving.
• Not being observant enough when attempting to park, or pull out of a parking space.
• Failing to actually STOP at a STOP sign - don't just roll past it.
• Being confused at when and where to turn, and hesitating for too long when it is your turn to go.
• Pressing down on the brakes too hard. You're supposed to brake smoothly, unless something happens and you have to come to a sudden halt. Even then, you should still be careful.

You don't want to simply become a good enough driver to pass the test; that isn't enough. You should strive to become a defensive driver who always knows what to do in order to ensure the safety of yourself, your passengers, and other vehicles on the road.

The only way you're going to become a safe driver is to learn everything you can and practice. Get out there and learn how to drive as safely as possible. Remember: don't tell anyone when you plan on taking the test if you are afraid of being embarrassed. It will help you to feel less stressful.

An Invitation

Last week I received an invitation to the nearest auto service center for a free winter checkup. The message also said that I can get new windshield wipers for $20.

 

From my experience, authorized service centers usually charge almost twice as much as necessary, and I'm not really in the mood for their "you need these for the winter" hard sells.
