1. Try to stay calm before going in for your test. This is an obvious, but many people have trouble with anxiety and nervousness. Do some relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and stretching before going into the DMV. Eat a large breakfast and drink water or juice. Don't drink any caffeine. If you have to have it, drink a minimum amount.

2. Ask friends and family about the testing routes. Find out where you'll be tested beforehand and practice driving around the area. Take note where all of the signs and signals are located.

3. Familiarize yourself with the test car. If you're going to be using your own, or your parents', make sure you know where all of the controls are. Practice driving in it until you are comfortable with it and know it like the back of your hand.

4. Watch online driving videos and read instructional material such as the official driving manual and ebooks. There are also practice tests you can take online. Take the practice tests over and over. If you miss any questions, learn the right answers.

5. When you start your test, remember to do the following: put your seatbelt on, make sure the passenger (the examiner) is wearing a seatbelt, check mirrors, adjust mirrors if necessary, and position your hands correctly on the wheel. The examiner might purposely not put his/her seatbelt on to see if you will notice.

6. Have trouble with parallel parking? You can perfect it by setting up boxes in an abandoned area. You can practice over and over again without fear of messing up and hitting anybody. Even if you do mess up, you'll only hit boxes.

7. During the testing process, always be conscious of the speed limit. Pay attention to the other cars on the road. Also, don't forget to turn your cell phone off!

If you follow these tips, and learn which mistakes to avoid, you should do all right! Common mistakes include everything from forgetting to signal properly to stopping inside an intersection.
