Insurance and Registration Renewal

After almost a year of car ownership, it's time to pay the price, and it's a heavy one. This week I had to renew my car registration and my insurance, both for very big sums of money.

The insurance agent was very nice on the phone and took the same price as last year, so I took the offer. It was also recommended to me by my family, so I didn't argue.

Registration renewal is pure theft by the government, but I cannot drive without it so I had to stand in line in the post office. Now I'm clear until next April, when I'll also have to take my car to a garage for a yearly test. Maybe I'll be able to afford a new car and skip this requirement...

Driving Test Do's and Dont's

When you take your driving test, there are some actions you must take while there are others you have to avoid. Here is an article I wrote about this topic.

Tips for Preparing for Your Driving Test – Learn What to Do and What NOT to Do

People fail their driving exam for a number of reasons, although the underlying cause is lack of practice. Some people are either too nervous or overly confident. The fact remains: if you lose so many points, you are going to fail.

Here is a list of common mistakes that people make during their exams. Try to avoid these:

• Ineffective observation when parallel parking
• Messing up parallel parking
• Not checking the mirrors properly
• Failing to signal properly, or not signaling at all
• Poor steering control
• Messing up a turn
• Incorrect positioning
• Not maintaining proper speed
• Braking too hard
• Striking an object or curb
• Making a dangerous maneuver
• Not merging smoothly• Making unnecessary stops
• Disobeying a signal, sign, or traffic light
• Letting the vehicle roll after coming to a stop

Now, here is a checklist of things that you need to do in order to pass the driving test:

• When you get in the car, remember to put your seatbelt on. Make sure the examiner has his/her seatbelt on.

• Don't forget to adjust the mirrors before starting the car.

• Remember to look both ways, AND behind you when pulling out. TURN your head to look behind you - don't just rely on the mirror.

• During the test, always follow the examiner's instructions. If you don't understand something, ASK. It's better to ask than to mess up because you're not clear about something.

• Always apply the brakes smoothly. Slow down for a stop by pressing the brakes gently. Remember to come to a complete stop at stop signs.

• When approaching a yellow light, slow down the car and prepare to stop for the red light. It's always better to stop at a yellow light just to be on the safe side.

• Maintain a reasonable amount of space between the vehicles surrounding you. There should be sufficient space in front of you and next to you. Always anticipate their moves just in case they make a mistake.

• Take your time parallel parking. Don't try to rush through it. It's better to do it slowly. If you have trouble, pull back out and try again. Don't worry if you have to start over - it's better than hitting the curb or another vehicle!

• Make sure you know how to park on a hill. The wheels need to be turned the right way. When facing downhill, the front wheels should be towards the curb. When facing uphill, the wheels are turned towards the road.

• You may need to know how to work the following: parking brakes, headlights, wipers, heater, parking lights, high beams, and other instruments. In other words, just familiarize yourself with the entire interior of the vehicle!

Hopefully, this checklist will provide you with the information you need to pass the driving test.

You can discover secrets for passing the driver's test online. For the written test, you will find interesting study guides and practice quizzes. For the road test, you will find plenty of helpful hints, tips, and tutorials.

Gain Confidence When Driving

When driving, one of the most important feelings is confidence. Too much can ruin you, but not having enough is also a disaster. Here is an article I wrote about this topic.

How to Feel Confident with Your Driving Abilities So That You Pass Your Driver’s Test

Everybody wants to pass their driver's test on the first try without any effort, but unfortunately, that's almost impossible to do. Approximately half of the test takers fail on their first try. Almost everybody is very nervous during their first try. Nervousness stems from lack of confidence.

How can you be confident in your driving ability? How can you keep from being nervous? The easiest way to overcome your anxiety is to practice and become comfortable behind the wheel. That said, you don't want to be TOO comfortable, as overconfidence can cause you to mess up as well.

Here are some tips on feeling confident about your driving:

• First things first, make sure you understand the rules of the road, traffic signs, and so forth. All of this information can be found in a guide to the written test. If you haven't taken the written test yet, you can find some practice tests online to help you prepare. Many of the questions on the practice tests are actual questions on the real test.

• Keep all of the rules in mind when you're practicing. Pay close attention to all of the signs. Know what you're supposed to do at each and every sign. This includes coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. Don't just slow down. You should also stop at a yellow light rather than attempt to go through it.

• Either practice driving with a qualified instructor, or ask a responsible adult for whom you have respect to help you. The person should inform you of your mistakes without yelling. Never practice driving with an anxious or nervous person.

• Ask others who have failed about the mistakes they made. Look online for a list of common mistakes. You might even be able to find a checklist of the things the examiner will watch for. Make a list of the mistakes you think you will make. Know your weaknesses and work on them.

• Although you should start out driving on a clear day, you should eventually practice in different weather conditions. If you can learn how to drive in rainy or even icy conditions, you will feel more confident. Just BE CAREFUL! Only practice driving in bad weather in an area where there aren't other cars.

• While you're at it, practice driving in various areas. Start off at an empty parking lot and work your way up to a slow road with few cars on it. Once you're comfortable with that, start driving on a two-lane road. And then, finally, practice on a busy freeway.

As long as you take your time and learn how to drive slowly, you should feel confident enough to pass your test. Good luck!

Check out an online driving test guide and get the details you need for passing! You can pass on the first try if you take advantage of online resources and tips. There's no need to feel nervous - all the information you need is at your fingertips!

Car Insurance Add-Ons

Sometimes, the standard auto insurance package just won't work. To make it more suitable for you, add-ons may be needed. Here is an article by Nelson McWilliams about several add-ons you can ask for.

Add-Ons for Car Insurance

Owning a car comes with certain responsibilities. Not only would one be responsible for filling up the gas tank, general maintenance, and repair, he or she is also responsible for having car insurance. Car insurance is a requirement by law but having insurance also gives car owners peace of mind knowing that should an accident happen they are covered. Basic car insurance will cover most drivers for the damage they cause to the property of others. Other insurance plans also cover the policyholder's car in the event it is damaged. When basic coverage is not enough, policyholders can purchase add-ons to extend the coverage of their policies.

One widely used add-on is uninsured motorist insurance. Although car insurance is a requirement by law, there are many people out there driving without proper insurance. If an uninsured driver was to cause an accident, the victim would likely be left footing the bill to get his or her vehicle repaired. With uninsured motorist insurance, a policyholder who is victim to an accident caused by an uninsured driver would be able to get his or her vehicle repaired by the insurance company. If a motorist is insured and caused more damage than his or her insurance policy will cover, uninsured motorist insurance will cover policyholders for the remainder.

When a vehicle is too damaged to be repaired, the insurance company will make the decision to junk it out. This means the policyholder is paid the amount the car is worth at that time. The problem is, the value of a new car depreciates rapidly and the junk out price is not sufficient to cover the entire amount still owed on the car. A GAP insurance add-on is perfect for this type of situation. GAP insurance pays the remainder of what is owed on a financed vehicle once an insurance payment is made. This relieves the policyholder of any other financial responsibility for the financed car and allows them to quickly purchase a new vehicle.

Roadside assistance and car rental are two add-ons that any car owner should consider adding to his or her policy. Roadside assistance gives the policyholder the added benefit of being able to call a tow truck when it's needed, get a jump when a battery is dead, and many others. This can give motorists additional peace of mind when on the road. A car rental add-on helps policyholders pay for the costs associated with renting a car should their vehicle be damaged or is being repaired. This type of coverage may not cover the entire costs but does help tremendously.

Basic car insurance is all that is required by law and for the most part gives people the coverage they need. When basic coverage is not enough to fit a person's needs or his or her peace of mind, there is always auto insurance add-ons. These add-ons can extend the coverage of the current policy or can give policyholders added protection when they need it most.

Reduce Driving Test Nervousness

Today is Friday the 13th, a date known as extremely scary. To help you deal with that fear, here is an article about reducing driving test nervousness.

Taking Your Driver’s Test Soon? Follow These Steps to Reduce Nervousness

You can overcome stress and nervousness over your driving test! If you're worried sick, you probably won't be able to drive as well as you should. You won't be able to retain everything that you learn because you will have the wrong mindset. In order to pass, you have think positive.

It's easier said than done, though, isn't it? You can't just snap your fingers and make the anxiety go away.

The good news is that there are some steps you can take to reduce the anxiety so that you will be able to focus more on the driving part of the test rather than your own nerves.

Here are the steps you need to take for reducing anxiety:

• Work on your mindset. Think positive. Keep telling yourself "I can do this. I can drive. I WILL pass my test" over and over again. You might even want to try some self-hypnosis for success. You'll be surprised at how helpful it can be!

• Some of your friends might try to tell you horror stories about how they failed. Don't listen to them. Don't read any horror stories of driving tests online, either. Try to avoid them at all costs. If you do end up listening to any, consider a learning experience. What can you do to NOT make the same mistakes?

• Don't tell anybody other than your parents about the test date. If your friends don't know when you're going to take it, you won't feel as much pressure. You will have to deal with the additional stress of trying to live up to their expectations.

• Try to schedule the test at a time when it does not coincide with other stressful events, such as exam week or preparations for prom or a wedding.

• The best way to prepare yourself is to practice! If you have problems with anything, ask your instructor to help you practice it. Be aware of your weaknesses and ask for help dealing with them. Spend some time trying to make improvements where necessary.

• Go at a practice run at the testing site the day before a test. Try a "pretend test". Have the instructor act all serious like an examiner. Have him/her make "notes" on a clipboard as if it's the real thing.

• Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Dress comfortably and show up early. If you get nervous, take some deep breaths and chant your mantra over and over again "Today will be a good day. Everything will go smoothly. I will do well."

As long as you follow these steps, you should be able to drive well on the day of your test. Just try to remain positive, and you will do fine.

You can learn driving theory online. Just look for driving secrets on how to pass you driving test. There is so much help and information online, including practice quizzes, stress reducers, and checklists. You'll find everything you need to help you pass!

Getting your driver's license is not that hard. If you would like to pass your driving test without trying so hard, you should get yourself this amazing driving test guide.

Choosing the Right Auto Insurance

Finding auto insurance is not very hard, since there are many companies providing it. However, choosing the right one is a little more difficult. Here is an article by Bryan A Smith describing this problem.

Choosing Auto Insurance

Insurance is defined as the paying of a premium to protect against loss. Most vehicle owners have a love/hate relationship with auto insurance, finding it a necessity with a worth largely dependent on who the authorities decide is the person at fault in an accident. Many will attempt to pay out of pocket damages in an accident in order to prevent their rates from increasing. This feels like a perversion of the concept of insurance which was designed to protect all parties involved. Auto insurance has been on the scene since the arrival of the automobile in the late nineteenth century. It was created with the idea that motorists should be protected from the potentially enormous financial loss of operating a car. The first liability insurance for a car was taken out in 1889 for Dr. Truman J. Martin in order to provide protection against claims arising from injuries or damage to other people or property. Almost twenty years after the introduction of the Ford Model T, the state of Massachusetts passed a law that mandated insurance for drivers.

In more modern times auto insurance is not an option either, and people must pay on a monthly or yearly basis dependent on the type, model, and year of the vehicle that they drive. Rates are still typically higher for men than women, and higher for single men. There are many companies available to choose from, and most offer more than just auto insurance. A plethora of options exist that cover auto insurance, home insurance, life insurance, business, farm, and commercial insurance. People choose their insurance companies for a variety of reasons, and stay with a company for years if their level of overall satisfaction is high. Satisfaction with an insurance company has been interpreted as: overall satisfaction, price and claims, interaction, policy offerings, and billing and payment.

There are multiple reasons to choose one policy or company over another and that choice could also depend on what the rates are for bundled insurance. People tend to bundle insurance because of the convenience of having home, life, and auto insurance in the same monthly payment and only having to negotiate with one company or representative. Customers tend to demonstrate loyalty to a company if they feel that they have been well treated, their concerns addressed, and the price reasonable.

Auto insurance has many facets. Liability covers injury to others and/or damage to their property through negligence by the owner. Accident benefits are mandatory in Alberta, and provide limited medical protection, death benefits, and lost wages coverage. Physical damage provides coverage for the owner's vehicle in the event of a collision or loss. There are different enhancements that can be added such as family protection or loss of use endorsements for more coverage and protection.

A family's choice of provider for life, home, business, and auto insurance has far-reaching implications in the event of a major incident. It is always better to have too much insurance than too little, and there are experts whose role it is to advise customers of their best choice. Auto insurance is only one aspect of protection for a household. It is best to check with an advisor for the best overall option. Research auto insurance until you have all of the information on the protection of life's priorities.

Gas Prices Spike Again

Six days ago, on Sunday, gas prices hiked again. Here gas prices are not a result of gas station competition but a government decision. So once again we had to indulge a raise, this time 5.4 cents per liter (20.4 cents per gallon). The price itself will be $2.14 per liter or $8.11 per gallon.

The reason for this price (double the US price) is the high tax imposed on gasoline. The really annoying part is the VAT, which is imposed on both the gasoline price and the gasoline tax, making each tax hike and price hike even more pricey.

Hopefully the government here will cut its spending soon to let prices drop (or hopefully the oil price will drop). Otherwise, the next elections won't be very friendly.

Top Driving Test Mistakes

Driving test mistakes are unavoidable, but can be reduced. Some mistakes can be tolerated while others lead to an immediate failure. Here is an article that will help you deal with both.

Top 9 Mistakes People Make When Taking Their Driving Exam

Are you studying for your driver's test? Are you hoping to get your license soon? Knowing which mistakes to avoid will help you prepare for your driving test. There are common mistakes that many people make when they take their tests. Don't let any horror stories you come across scare you. Instead, learn from them!

Here is a guide to some of the common mistakes made during driving exams.

1. Not changing lanes properly. Don't just check the mirrors - check your blind spots as well. Turn on the appropriate signal. Make sure everything is clear before changing lanes. Keep the speed up.

2. Not having good steering control. Keep BOTH hands in the correct positions at all times. Never jerk the wheel, or let it slip too casually.

3. Driving at an improper speed. While being cautious is fine, you don't want to be OVERLY cautious. Don't drive far below the speed limit. This can be unsafe for you and the other drivers. Also, don't drive too fast for the road and weather conditions. If you're driving in fog or rain, it's okay to slow down a bit.

4. Getting confused at an intersection. Know what to do when there are other cars waiting at an intersection. Wait your turn and go when you're supposed to. Be sure to signal properly. Remember the right of way rule.

5. Making incomplete stops. This is a common mistake made by even experienced drivers. They slow down, but never come to a complete stop. You must come to a complete stop, even if it's just for a few seconds. Be sure to stop before a line at a STOP sign. Also, come to a complete stop at red AND yellow lights.

6. Braking too hard or too soft. Know how much pressure to put on the brakes at any given moment. The only time hard braking is really acceptable is during emergency situations. Try to avoid doing it as best you can. In most cases, a soft brake is enough to get the job done.

7. Not parallel parking correctly. Don't try to rush through it. Just take your time. Do whatever you need to do to avoid hitting other cars. In some states it's okay to gently touch the curb, just as long as you don't roll over it.

8. Not checking the mirrors regularly. Don't forget to check the side mirrors and rearview mirror. It's always good to know where the other vehicles are, even if you're not planning to change lanes.

9. Improper use of the accelerator. Too much pressure can cause the wheel to spin. Know when to remove pressure while changing gear. Do not use erratic pressure, as it will cause surging.

There are some great, comprehensive driving guides online. You can learn about many other mistakes you need to avoid. You can learn all there is to know about driving by taking an online driving course. Take the knowledge you learn and apply it as you practice driving.

Getting your driver's license is not that hard. If you would like to pass your driving test without trying so hard, you should get yourself this amazing driving test guide.

Brief Guide for Insurance Rates

Understanding insurance rates is not an easy mission. Here is an article by David D Mortel that will make it a little easier.

Brief Guide to Understanding Insurance Rates For Auto Insurance

Auto insurance, especially the rates is a very confusing subject matter. This is because there are a lot of factors to consider in determining the premiums paid as well as the total insurance fees.

How it Works

Automobile insurance works by distributing the risk of paying for an insured risk with different individuals. The consumer pays a provider contract fees as well as premiums in order to be able to collect once a risk that is covered occurs. The provider collects from different consumers' amounts called "premiums" to be placed in a common fund. If a consumer meets with an allied risk that is not exempt he or she collects. If the risk is not met the consumer does not get anything from the provider.

Coverage: Amount and Type

Coverage determines how much the total insurance cost is as well as the premiums paid because it sets the instances when payment will be made as well as the limits to the payable amount. As a general rule the more coverage you get and the higher the limit, the higher the automobile insurance. There are of course numerous types of coverage, below are a few of the more popular types of coverage:

1. Liability for bodily injury;
2. Liability for damage to property;
3. Under Insured coverage;
4. Uninsured Coverage;
5. Collision coverage.

Exemptions

This guide will not be complete without discussing exemptions. Exemptions are risks that would otherwise be included in the policy had it not been expressly deemed not included. As a general rule the more exemptions the lower the risk hence the lower the rates. The problem with exemptions is the fact that insurers specifically choose particular exemptions that increase the risk of paying; hence too any exemptions ay defeat the purpose of insurance in the first place. Pay special attention to the part of the policy that discusses exemptions because failure to comply with certain guidelines may exempt a person for otherwise collecting. For example, an otherwise valid claim can be exempted if the automobile used does not meet with certain standards like 2 functioning headlights and tail lights as well as proper use of hazard gear.

Legal Requirements

Insurance is an area of commerce that is imbued with public interest hence the state steps in to provide certain guidelines as well as mandatory requirements. The state may step in to limit the fees such as the case of the state disallowing insurers to charge women drivers with higher fees than male drivers regardless of studies, data and surveys showing different amounts of risk. The state may even require additional insurance to be had by certain individuals. For example, some states require a single liability while others allow a mixed limit. Another example is when the state requires high risk insurance policies for persons who have been found guilty of driving under the influence.

In closing, there are any different factors to consider when computing rates. Regardless of the different factors discussed in this guide, a sure way to limit rates is still to properly understand the concept of insurance. This understanding will be the consumer's leverage when computing and negotiating for better rates.
