Top 9 Mistakes People Make When Taking Their Driving Exam

Are you studying for your driver's test? Are you hoping to get your license soon? Knowing which mistakes to avoid will help you prepare for your driving test. There are common mistakes that many people make when they take their tests. Don't let any horror stories you come across scare you. Instead, learn from them!

Here is a guide to some of the common mistakes made during driving exams.

1. Not changing lanes properly. Don't just check the mirrors - check your blind spots as well. Turn on the appropriate signal. Make sure everything is clear before changing lanes. Keep the speed up.

2. Not having good steering control. Keep BOTH hands in the correct positions at all times. Never jerk the wheel, or let it slip too casually.

3. Driving at an improper speed. While being cautious is fine, you don't want to be OVERLY cautious. Don't drive far below the speed limit. This can be unsafe for you and the other drivers. Also, don't drive too fast for the road and weather conditions. If you're driving in fog or rain, it's okay to slow down a bit.

4. Getting confused at an intersection. Know what to do when there are other cars waiting at an intersection. Wait your turn and go when you're supposed to. Be sure to signal properly. Remember the right of way rule.

5. Making incomplete stops. This is a common mistake made by even experienced drivers. They slow down, but never come to a complete stop. You must come to a complete stop, even if it's just for a few seconds. Be sure to stop before a line at a STOP sign. Also, come to a complete stop at red AND yellow lights.

6. Braking too hard or too soft. Know how much pressure to put on the brakes at any given moment. The only time hard braking is really acceptable is during emergency situations. Try to avoid doing it as best you can. In most cases, a soft brake is enough to get the job done.

7. Not parallel parking correctly. Don't try to rush through it. Just take your time. Do whatever you need to do to avoid hitting other cars. In some states it's okay to gently touch the curb, just as long as you don't roll over it.

8. Not checking the mirrors regularly. Don't forget to check the side mirrors and rearview mirror. It's always good to know where the other vehicles are, even if you're not planning to change lanes.

9. Improper use of the accelerator. Too much pressure can cause the wheel to spin. Know when to remove pressure while changing gear. Do not use erratic pressure, as it will cause surging.
