Driving Test Do's and Dont's

When you take your driving test, there are some actions you must take while there are others you have to avoid. Here is an article I wrote about this topic.

Tips for Preparing for Your Driving Test – Learn What to Do and What NOT to Do

People fail their driving exam for a number of reasons, although the underlying cause is lack of practice. Some people are either too nervous or overly confident. The fact remains: if you lose so many points, you are going to fail.

Here is a list of common mistakes that people make during their exams. Try to avoid these:

• Ineffective observation when parallel parking
• Messing up parallel parking
• Not checking the mirrors properly
• Failing to signal properly, or not signaling at all
• Poor steering control
• Messing up a turn
• Incorrect positioning
• Not maintaining proper speed
• Braking too hard
• Striking an object or curb
• Making a dangerous maneuver
• Not merging smoothly• Making unnecessary stops
• Disobeying a signal, sign, or traffic light
• Letting the vehicle roll after coming to a stop

Now, here is a checklist of things that you need to do in order to pass the driving test:

• When you get in the car, remember to put your seatbelt on. Make sure the examiner has his/her seatbelt on.

• Don't forget to adjust the mirrors before starting the car.

• Remember to look both ways, AND behind you when pulling out. TURN your head to look behind you - don't just rely on the mirror.

• During the test, always follow the examiner's instructions. If you don't understand something, ASK. It's better to ask than to mess up because you're not clear about something.

• Always apply the brakes smoothly. Slow down for a stop by pressing the brakes gently. Remember to come to a complete stop at stop signs.

• When approaching a yellow light, slow down the car and prepare to stop for the red light. It's always better to stop at a yellow light just to be on the safe side.

• Maintain a reasonable amount of space between the vehicles surrounding you. There should be sufficient space in front of you and next to you. Always anticipate their moves just in case they make a mistake.

• Take your time parallel parking. Don't try to rush through it. It's better to do it slowly. If you have trouble, pull back out and try again. Don't worry if you have to start over - it's better than hitting the curb or another vehicle!

• Make sure you know how to park on a hill. The wheels need to be turned the right way. When facing downhill, the front wheels should be towards the curb. When facing uphill, the wheels are turned towards the road.

• You may need to know how to work the following: parking brakes, headlights, wipers, heater, parking lights, high beams, and other instruments. In other words, just familiarize yourself with the entire interior of the vehicle!

Hopefully, this checklist will provide you with the information you need to pass the driving test.
